Volleyball Saturday

Hello volleyball friends,

Mid-City Youth Volleyball (MCYV) and The Mid-City Volleyball Group (MCVG) will be holding their usual activities along Bayou St John this Saturday despite the fact that the French Quarter Festival will undoubtedly draw some players this weekend. The free youth clinic will run from 9:30am to 11:30am, adults will arrive between 11:30am and 11:45am for a “speed” tournament at noon (cost is $5.00/player), and free play will follow the tournament. For those that don’t know, we set up across from the Mid-City post office whose address is 501 N. Jefferson Davis Parkway.

The 2013 Red Dress Run is August 10, and it’s not too early to sign up for the fun: http://nolareddress.com/. The New Orleans Hash House Harriers Red Dress Run (NOH3RDR) has given generously to our volleyball groups over the years, and in fact most of the portable nets we use and the eighteen piles of sand behind the post office are directly related to the grants we’ve received from the NOH3RDR. Let’s in turn support their event by participating in the world’s largest Red Dress Run! Even if you cannot participate for some reason on 8/10/13, you can make a donation on their website.

Speaking of events, here are three coming up this spring in which MCVG and/or MCYV will play a crucial role:

1) This year’s annual Hike the Lafitte Corridor is Saturday May 11. Peter Hickman is a Greenway Ambassador and will be leading a small group of hikers up the path. Meanwhile, MCVG will set up nets along the Greenway and do something special for the passersby.

2) This year’s annual Bayou Boogaloo Bicycle Pub Crawl will be Saturday morning May 18. It’s a joint fundraiser for MCVG and the MotherShip Foundation (which produces the Bayou Boogaloo), and though you don’t have to donate or drink I recommend both. The pub crawl is always quite fun, and this year it will include free food at two stops and music by The Pinstripe Brass Band at the Zulu Club. We will have on-line registration for this event available on the www.midcityvolleyball.org website very soon (I promise).

3) MCVG is organizing a volleyball trip to La Ceiba Honduras from June 5 through June 10, and there may be two spots still open. Total cost of airfare is $560.00 and must be paid by the end of April. If you think you may be able to be an “alternate” if the two uncommitted travelers end up backing out, please contact me as soon as possible. We have yet to make hotel arrangements, but we already know where we will stay (the Grand Hotel is offering us a 15% discount). Our days will be filled with beach volleyball, eating and drinking with friends, and touring the area with Honduran hosts who are buddies with John Martinez. Our party is nineteen people strong!

That’s it for this week. Have a wonderful weekend if I don’t see you Saturday.

Yours truly,
Peter Hickman
President of MCVG and MCYV
